BitTorrent Sync is a file synchronization software that does not utilize cloud storage to transfer files between devices.
We have reviewed the software in the past, the first alpha and beta versions, and the big BitTorrent Sync 1.4 update that improved the sharing of folders significantly.
The service is available for desktop operating systems and mobile devices. Up until now, mobile devices gave you access to shared folders and files but barely any productivity options.
It was not possible for instance to edit files stored in a synced folder. While that may not have been a top requirement for all users, it put the service at a severe disadvantage in the eyes of others.
The recent mobile update of BitTorrent Sync changes that. BitTorrent Inc has updated all mobile versions of the application, available for Android, iOS, Windows Phone and Kindle, to support more than just the viewing of files.
Probably the two biggest features introduced in the most recent version are direct file editing and saving options to sync folders.
The adding of files has improved significantly in the new version as it is now possible to add files directly to any existing folder in Sync, and not only local folders on the Android device.
This works via the built-in share functionality of the device for example, but you can also add files directly from within the application by selecting a folder and then the add icon that is displayed on the next page.
Editing of files has improved as well. Previously, you could open files in a shared folder only by selecting a different installed application on the device to edit it. What you could not do however was save the file back using BitTorrent Sync.
The new version introduces that so that you can edit files on the mobile device and save any changes made to the Sync folder so that other devices and users get access to the newly edited file right away.
The two features make things a lot easier and comfortable when using mobile devices. One thing that is still missing is an option to create a new folder for sharing directly on the mobile device.
