How to install Cerebro Search on Ubuntu 17.04 and Below

Cerebro Search is an open-source and powerful search app. It works like a local search engine for Linux based operating systems. It is very close to the macOS application named spotlight. The Cerebro Search implements the same functionality as the spotlight. So, previously if you were a macOS user, then it will be convenient and easy for you to use Cerebro Search. The Cerebro Search can be easily installed on Ubuntu 17.04 and below versions by performing some simple steps.

This article briefly describes the installation of Cerebro Search on Ubuntu 17.04.

Install Cerebro Search on Ubuntu 17.04 and below

Follow the following steps to install Cerebro Search on Ubuntu 170.4 and below versions:

Step 1: Update apt cache

As always, before installing any new application, update Ubuntu 17.04 system's apt-cache using the following command:

$ sudo apt update

The apt cache will be updated successfully.

Step 2: Upgrade apt cache

Next, upgrade the apt-cache by running the following command:

$ sudo apt upgrade

Step 3: Download Cerebro Search application

The Cerebro Search application is available on Github. It can be easily downloaded using the wget command. Run the following command to download the Cerebro Search application from GitHub using wget:

$ wget https://github.com/KELiON/cerebro/releases/download/v0.3.2/cerebro_0.3.2_amd64.deb

The downloading of the Cerebro Search application will take a couple of minutes.

Step 4: Install the Cerebro search application

After successfully downloading the Cerebro search application Debian package, we are ready to install it. Run the command given below to install the Cerebro Search application on your Ubuntu 17.04:

$ sudo dpkg -i cerebro_0.3.0_amd64.deb

Note: while installing the Cerebro Search deb package, if you encounter some dependencies issues, then run the following command to fix the dependencies issues:

$ sudo apt --fix-broken install

Next, install the Cerebro Search application now by using the aforementioned dpkg command.

Note:

The Cerebro Search application is not supported on the latest Ubuntu version like Ubuntu 20.04. The Cerebro Search application requires Harfbuzz's old version, which is not available for Ubuntu 20.04. However, the Cerebro search application can be installed on Ubuntu 20.04 using the above-given method, but when you will launch the application, you will find the following error:

Cerebro is a search application available for Linux based operating systems. It resembles with spotlight application, which is available for macOS. The Cerebro Search application is no longer supported on Ubuntu's latest versions like Ubuntu 20.04.
