Up until today, only Gmail and Yahoo! Mail offered two-step verification. The good news is that Microsoft has started rolling out two-step verification for all Microsoft accounts. That is, users who have an Outlook.com, Live, MSN or Hotmail account can now protect their accounts with this two-step verification method.
For those users who don't know what two-step verification is, it's a simple way to better protect your online account. Once enabled, each time when you try to sign-in to your two-step verification enabled account, you'll receive a text message or email with a code that you need to enter to sign-in to your account.
Two-step is probably the best way out there to add additional layer of security to your account as others can't sign-in to your account even if they have the password.
Please note that Microsoft has just rolled this feature and you might need to wait for a few days to see the option in your account. Interested users can complete the given below instructions to enable the two-step verification feature on their Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, and MSN accounts.
How to enable two-step verification:
Step 1: Sign-in to your Microsoft email account.
Step 2: Click on your user name that appears on the upper-right and then click Account settings. If you're prompted to enter your account password, please do so to continue.
Step 3: On the Account summary page, under Password and security info, click Edit security info to open Security info page. And if you can't find Edit security info option, head over to this page to sign-in directly to your security page.
Step 4: Here, under Two-step verification, click Setup two-step verification option and then provide necessary details such as your phone number or alternate email address to which you would to receive the security code.
