How to set up and manage Cortana Settings in Windows 10

Cortana Settings in Windows 10 include all the settings related to how Cortana responds when the battery of your PC is low or when the device is locked, and such. These settings enable you to chat with Cortana, choose the Cortana language, personalize permissions, and more. Keep reading to learn more about these settings.

Cortana Settings in Windows 10

To open the Cortana Settings on your Windows 10 PC, click on the Start menu > Windows Settings > Cortana. A new window consisting of all the settings related to Cortana will open. In the left pane, you will see three categories-

  1. Talk to Cortana,
  2. Permissions, and
  3. More details.

Let us check what's under each of these categories.

1. Talk to Cortana

Firstly, it is important to check whether the microphone is functioning properly so that Cortana can hear you without any issues. To do so, click on Check the microphone. Under Hey Cortana, you can turn on the option to allow Cortana to respond to you when you say 'Hey Cortana'.  Next to that you need to know is that the keyboard shortcut to launch Cortana is Windows logo key + C. You can turn on that option here as well.

Secondly, under the Lock Screen sub-category, you can choose to use Cortana even when your device is locked. You will find the link to Lock screen settings. Select the checkbox if you want to allow Cortana to access your calendar, email, etc. even when your device is locked.

Lastly, you can choose the Cortana language from the given list of options by clicking on the drop-down menu.

Furthermore, you will see additional links to chatting with Cortana, learning Cortana commands, troubleshooting Cortana can't hear me, and learning Cortana's regions and languages.

2. Permissions

To personalize permissions, click on the option Sign In.

A small window like this will appear. Click Personalize and follow the steps. Under Permissions sub-category, you will find the link to Manage the information Cortana can access from this device. Here, you can manage what Cortana can see and use by turning on the location, contacts, email, calendar & communication history, and browsing history.

In Related settings, you will also be able to see the link to Changing privacy settings.

3. More details

In this category, as you can see, you will find the links to the Privacy Statement, Windows privacy options, and Cortana & search. All these links will help you learn and manage other personal information settings. You will learn all about Cortana and your privacy and how Cortana and Windows Search will work with Bing.
