How to rename scheduled task in Windows Task Scheduler

Windows Task Scheduler is probably one of the most useful, but less-used features Microsoft Windows because it lets you automate running of tasks that you want to run regularly. It not only lets the operating system schedule important system tasks, but also allows you to send email, schedule shutdowns, wake up a PC from Sleep, update Windows Defender, make Windows speak out, play a song and more!

In case you have numerous tasks set by Windows Task Scheduler, you certainly need to write a concise explanation along with a simple title to recognize your tasks. The problem begins when you need to change or rename a Task, for some reason.

Task Scheduler doesn't allow you to rename any task - no matter whether it is a preset system task or one created by you. When you open the Properties of any task, you will get a screen that looks like this.

We know how to schedule a new task, but there is no direct option to rename a scheduled task. You have to carry out the following steps in order to rename Windows Task Scheduler task.

Rename Windows Task Scheduler Task

Open your Task Scheduler via Start Search and pick out the task that you want to rename. Next, click on the Export button that is positioned under Selected Item tab.

A Save As window will open. Save the file to a location of your choice. Just make sure that the file type is .XML.

Now, open Windows Task Scheduler and delete the particular task that you have exported. To do so, right-click on that task and select Delete.

Thereafter, click on Import Task button that is positioned under either Task Scheduler Library or Task Scheduler (Local).

Select the exported .XML file and open it up.

You will now be offered and option to edit the task name, in the Create Task box.

After renaming the task, you can hit the OK button.

In short, you are exporting a task, deleting the task and then importing the task anew - which gives you a chance to rename it. While it is fine to do it for tasks created by you, it may NOT be a good ide to rename tasks which may have created by the operating system.

This process doesn't let you rename tasks in bulk. If you need to rename multiple tasks, you will have to perform the same steps for each task.
