After six months of development, Canonical has released the final version of the Ubuntu 17.04. Named as Zesty Zapus, it is important to note that this version is not a LTS (Long Term Support), henceforth, it is only supported for 9 months.
Security updates will be provided ONLY until January 2018.
What's New in Ubuntu 17.04
- Latest stable Linux 4.10 kernel
- Up-to-date graphics stack based on X.Org Server 1.19.3 and Mesa 17.0.3
- You still get Unity 7 (GNOME desktop starts from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS)
- Driverless printing
- Swap file will be used instead of a swap partition
- Ships with LibreOffice 5.3
- Latest version of DPDK, 16.11.1
- Support for GPU passthrough, including NVidia CUDA.
- New storage API has also been added that let's you create multiple storage pools which can then be used to host containers or independent storage volumes
Who shouldn't upgrade to Ubuntu 17.04?
Since the supported lifespan is just 9 months, people who want a long-term support should use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS instead.
Ubuntu 17.04 is only for those who want to try their hands on new technologies. Those who don't want their Ubuntu installation to be disturbed for a long period are recommended to stay on LTS versions.
